This is my other Halloween story. I know it's soppy!

No, it's not. It's lovely.
There's room around the Halloween fire for all manner and kinds of reflections. I like this one very much. After all, that's what it's really all about, not Elvira.

Quite so! I cried when I read this story.
What's Elvira mean?
I just read this story half and hour ago, and posted my comments in another place by mistake, like I started a completely separate conversation, entitled Samhain. doh. Why did I do that? Tell you what, I'll paste it here, what I said, then we'll all be speaking the same speakness. If I can. Next posting.

Totally amazing, all this Hallowe'en talk, and I am learning so much, and thinking about so much.
Anyway, here's what I said about Samhain......
About a couple of hours ago I was thinking about all what we have been talking about, energies in ancient places, and the effect you created in your Bellevue Park story, and the cycle of life and death, and my parents' funerals and things.
Then, in my thoughts, I was transported to an ancient place, there were buzzards, and symbols carved in the chalk (must be the South Downs) and there was woodsmoke....
So wowzum, your story spoke to me, and then of course it has just made me cry, when Jim sees his father with the firelight reflected in his glasses, and his mother, and Susie, the way that it was all there in the shadows, with the ancients......and it's as if we have been there, will go there again....
...and so healing is that beautiful last paragraph that later I will have to go on about many things. .. and ... and yes!!! and thankyou, for Samhain.

I'm glad my story worked for you cc.
This was the impression I was trying for, but these emotional states are so difficult to get right . I was afraid it had toppled into sentimentality.
I must put the smell of woodsmoke in there, somewhere.

Yes to all that CC has said.
Elvira was a frivolous reference on my part. She is a TV hostess for late-night horror movies who dresses up in campy costumes. Rather cute and harmless, the sort of thing we associate with Halloween. Her real name is Cassandra Peterson, and she's quite attractive out of makeup.

She should have stuck with Cassandra - a good name for someone who foresees death and disaster.

What?? OK, so Cassandra, aka Elvira. Thanks for the info. heheh They're the same person?? How extraordinary!
Reminds me of Alice Cooper for some reason. He's a totally different guy outside of his mock horror gothic type stage persona, plays golf and things. .
Now, to try to figure mvp's intelligent reference to the name Cassandra....
hmm
I'll get there ... unless someone enlightens me first ....
I'm still very affected by Samhain and everything we are talking about. Been thinking about it all day.

MVP has a great point about Cassandra, a figure in Greek mythology who had psychic powers, but was doomed to be disbelieved.
Why don't we have a crystal ball smiley?

We do need a crystal ball smiley. heheh. Look into the smileeee
Look into the smileeeee, ah now I understand all ....
So, another intelligent reference to Greek Mythology, eh? I like it. So Cassandra was doomed to be disbelieved? I wonder why. I must learn.
That would be so annoying to be disbelieved all the time.
Story of my life, but then I am only a quarter psychic and three quarters beagle, so I'm not a pedigree prophet.
I need to sleep.
I must check up on my Greek Mythology. I don't know where I was when everyone else was learning about it. I guess I was daydreaming.
