These are my interpretation of what I see and read about this subject. Does anyone else have other ideas/explanations?

I wish I knew enough to comment. It reads plausibly. The idea of a distintegrated fifth planet's remains still circling the sun with us is unsettling.
You might get some more opinions here in this workshop but you'd be more likely to get discussion in a couple of other h2g2 forums. There the Science Explained one at A4108330, and the more general Ask h2g2 one at A148907.
Welcome to h2g2 .

Hi George, welcome to H2. No doubt one of our Aces will be along soon to give you an official welcome.
In the meanwhile either of the above two references would be good places to pose the questions in your article where you're likely to get a better response.
There is also a H2G2 Astronomy Society that you might like to try where some researchers are still subscribed.
It's here:

Hi Llwaz.
Sorry for the delay in replying. I'm new to h2g2 and assumed that I had to wait a week for this entry to be reviewed, so did't really look for it.
From what I've seen/read the only major threat that might be on the horizon, so far as earth is concerned, is some astroid that may collide with the earth in about 30 years time. Hopefully if this is the case, we will have developed the technology to prevent this by then.
I'll follow up on your recommendations and links, and another supplied by another member. Thanks.

Hi Deke.
Thanks for the pointers. Looks like I should put this all into one thread with the reply to Llwaz. I'm still learning.
George
