A very very fine work Professor!
I think that one of its qualities is that it makes the reader wonder what perfect hair could be. You don't really describe the hair in any great detail, so it lets the reader do it. Good call on that I think
It also takes a very scientific side, where I expected something sillier, though it certainly is very silly. I did not expect that

I was starting off with silliness in mind, but then I ran out of ideas...

A fine body of words indeed! I'm not convinced though. I mean there were quite a few mediumnesses about it. In hair thickness, and diameter and so on. I think this needs market research, thorough statistical analysis, graphs and that ultimate proof of what's what, a 'let the nation decide' television poll.
I have to admit however that it's very impessive hair (Jodan, if you don't really want to know look away now, and no peeking through your fingers) in this http://vcl.ctrl-c.liu.se/vcl/Artists/Sheve-Dark/2001/SV-melancholykat.gif.

ummm...actually...I'm afraid that's not at all the hair I was making reference to...
The hair actually belongs to a person, not a strange mammal. The name Melancholykat is an alias on Deviantart.com you can see it there if you wish
Where ever did you get that?

I had the assistance of Google. You mean there's two Melancholykats?Or you're writing about the hair of the real person behind the alias, while that picture is someone's impression of the alias?
This is complicated.
I had a look round Deviantart.com, also courtesy of Google, it's quite a place. It's one of the reasons I've spent far too much time on this machine today.

The hair of the person behind the alias. She has self-portrait photographs posted and edited, where I came upon her hair.
Yes, dev is quite a place. A revolution in art, some 300,000 artists. No where else will you find such a large group

I looked, why didn't I think of that? Impressive pictures.
The site looks almost as complicated to find your way around as h2g2.

Nice.
You say you started it as a silly, but ran out of ideas? Well, I think the scientific tone you adopt really makes this piece stand out. It's such a bizarre subject to be written in that way.
I can't wait to see some perfect hair.
