Have you tried pressing F8 just before the Windows logo Appears. This gives you options like step-b-step or Safe Mode, etc. Otherwise try a boot disk. If these both fail, you're doomed (probably a BIOS problem).

(Having worked in tech support I can see it from the other side as well, where human-computer telepathy is a required attribute when someone calls up and says "My PC's broke" )

I like this. I think it's CAC worthy though it is more of a journal entry than a developed piece of creative writing.
