I'm in Vancouver, BC, where reduced-rate daytime shows are only slightly less expensive than the regular admission....which is nearing $10. for 90 minutes worth of mostly crap.

Rep(ertoir) houses have a far better deal: usually two full features for $5.00 (CDN) plus substantially better nosh....or a wider variety that costs a bit less. Many of these rep. houses also have a different attitude toward the film-going public: they want patrons to enjoy the show in a relaxed manner, whereas first-run cinemas want you to relax and then LEAVE. Other patrons are usually more respectful of the rest as well.

As for choosing a film, I always prefer something small or obscure over Hollywood fare: they're usually more interesting, provocative or engaging. While there is some stuff that Hollywood does very well (loud, action-laden, effects-heavy pictures) there are some things that they do poorly or infrequently: a small, character-driven piece that's real and emotionally satisfying. I usually have to run to European/Australian/Asian pictures to get those...

Personal choice, really.
