h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

I'm about half way through writing a novel (called "Impunity", in fact), and I'm in need of some advice on what the British police would do in a certain situation. Does anybody know any useful web sites? Is anybody out there a useful policeperson? I'll summarise the position for general discussion if necessary, but I'm not convinced that the denizens of the guide are the best people to give a factual and unbiased account in this area (which is not intended to belittle said denizens...).
