With a humble plea for your indulgence - and my profound 'thanks from the mountain' for same in advance - I am posting this for a short time only to allow a few characters a moment in the light of day.
They have, it seems, been too long locked in darkness (and they were beginning to get a bit mouldy 'round the edges).
I felt the need to let them breathe a little.
Thank you all.

Like it - a nice distinctive voice to this.
I imagine it is the beginning of something much longer - consider our appetite whetted!

Thanks, sprout. It is most certainly 'part' of something longer, but whether 'tis beginning, end or just a bit extracted from somewhere 'twixt the two is a matter of considerable - and mostly internal - debate.
I'm pondering. Wondering, and pondering. Oh, and wandering, as well, now and then.

Intriguing ..., the characters, and words, are ones to wonder, ponder and wander over a few times.
Glad you let them out for a while, p.

"black as the blood of bugs and icons of ebony" - I love the poetry that these characters of yours come out with - glad you're letting them breathe the light of day!
don't let them get mouldy round the edges any more - send them this way!
its an interesting thought - I guess many writers have characters locked away in the darkness of the secret-brain - I suppose letting them out is art, and keeping them in is ? .... but then I suppose it is the right of the writer to keep them in also -
sometimes I keep writer-world things in my brain for ages, just in case its not the time or place to let them out, and I used to think it would impair me, but in fact it doesn't. They get out anyway - just when I think I am being normal in the supermarket, the monkeyman dream spirit winks at me from behind the soup cans -
don't mind me, I'm always straying out into thought mazes -
thanks poetique
Helen

Thank you all.
I only wish I was making a bit more 'progress' in this 'work in progress' . . . .
Alas...

Oh, Helen... you sweet talker you.
(In all honesty, I never expected this, er, 'fragment' to attract much comment, let alone a place in The Post! It's a very encouraging development indeed!)
Thank you!
