A Conversation for Queen Elizabeth II
'Queen Elizabeth' and the Coronation

Hi GB
This is looking really great. I recently researched her coronation for a non-h2g2 project and could help with a few little facts on that bit.
One correction though, it wasn't the first televised coronation as her father's coronation had been broadcast. However, back then BBC television only covered London and the Home Counties so it could be said to be the first national broadcast of a coronation.
The BBC was able to get film cannisters of the event and export it to other countries in the commonwealth and around the world so that, for instance, Canadian viewers were able to watch the footage at the same time of the day as we'd seen it (thanks also to the wonders of time zones).
The coronation gown was made by Normal Hartnell, who initially turned down the honour because of the challenges that he'd have to overcome. The dress was covered with amethysts and diamonds that Hartnell felt would take advantage of the lights that would be used for the benefit of the TV cameras.
Initially, there had been some reluctance to allow the cameras into Westminster Abbey with some officials fearing that the people 'at home' would end up with a better view than the invited guests. The BBC was told therefore not to attempt to get a close-up of the young Queen (an instruction they ultimately ignored, without comment from the Palace).

Hi Jimster
Thanks for this - I'll add the Norman Hartnell info. I can get my mother's eyes to sparkle by bringing up this subject, all those years ago and she can recall queueing to see the dress like it was yesterday.
I really should write an entry on my mother's recollections, (she helped me write the WWII Rationing in Britain entry, have you read that?) A533918
