This is my ending to the story of Dryad, a competition I entered in 2004. Joanne Harris wrote the start of the story, and the challenge was to complete an ending for the story in 1200 words or less.

From the first reading I was struck with the conviction that this ending is a story unto itself, standing as proud and tall as the beech itself and deserving of recognition on it's own merits as a full and complete work.
The emotions convied bring this piece to life, the sentiment so richly expressed having true impact on anyone who has ever been in a relationship before. Even now I can recall my last 'disaggrement' with my significant other and feel remorse, vowing that the next time, and of course there will be a next time as life isn't perfect, I will remember this piece and reign in my emotion, tempering my anger with compassion.
And so once again personal growth is found amidst the carfully crafted words of a true artist. My thanks to the author for the gift of this wonderful story, I am now a richer man for the reading.

Loved the unpredictable finish. Found it necessary to continue reading once begun. Good stuff.

Hello Flame,
My two colleagues have said it all.
They won't mind my endorsing their remarks, I'm sure!
I feel the same about this story as I did about your last one: utterly professional. If only I could compete, but we can't all be as good as you!
Each to his/her own strengths, I say.
You have got us batting for you!
You haven't spotted the one error: 'happens' (in second paragraph of your synopsis)
