A Conversation for The Ten Essentials

Jeremy (trying to find his way back to dinner)

This Entry is about the so called "Ten Essentials" that every hiker in the wilderness should carry with him/her.

http://www.h2g2.com/A473690

I think it would be a valuable addition to the Guide, as it gives some useful and maybe even lifesaving information. The Ten Essentials were not invented by me, they are more or less common knowledge of the outdoor fans (at least they should be!).

Good one Jeremy!

The names of publications should use , rather than quotes; and other quotes should be in single quotation marks. There are a couple of typos in the last two essentials. Otherwise: thumbs up.smiley - smiley

Thanks, JTG.

I changed the formatting as you told me and I tried to fix the typos. Maybe some typos have slipped trough, but that's a second language problem, and I hope for a SubEd (if my entry is picked) to take care of that.

Some excellent points in this article...smiley - smiley. I would like to see a little more general information on hiking deaths per year in various countries, as it might give little background, but the points about GPS devices and 'knowing how to use them' are particularly well made. I thoroughly like this one.

JTG, have you already recommended this...?

I did some online research to find something like hiking deaths statistics. Unfortunately I found nothing that's really comprehensive. Maybe some other researcher could help me out on that, it might be a valuable addition to my Entry. However, I wrote it to bring the Ten Essentials back to the minds of those who want to go out to the wilderness. I could live without the statistics. Other opinions are welcome!

Howdy Hypo. I'm not a part of the Scout fraternity; so any recommending I do is in the capacity of a fellow Researcher with a bit of a vested interest in seeing Entries worked up to perfection before they hit my in-tray.smiley - smiley

I'm not a big fan of stats, either; and I don't think this Entry suffers in the least for the want of them. On the contrary, it reads nicely as it is.smiley - smiley

Thanks, John, for your support. That's exactly hat I had in mind when I wrote the Entry. "Ten Essentials" is a fixed term among outdoor fans. Without any religious offense intended, if someone wrote an Entry about the Ten Commandments, nobody would miss some statistics of sinners (though it might be interesting to a certain degree).

I'd prefer to leave it as it is (typo and grammar fixes allowed, of course smiley - smiley).

No problem with either of those points of view.

Sounds good to me, so I might put in my two cents worth with the PTBs...smiley - smiley!

And The One Essential To Leave Behind...

Someone who knows where you're going and when you're due back.

Well you've got eleven in your list of ten already! Would you regard this as an essential or does the true hiker stride into the wilderness in complete independence, confident in the possession of his ten essentials, to follow wherever his fancy takes him? I'm not a hiker, I don't know. I've read a lot of advice on always making sure someone knows your plans but I can see the attraction of not having plans.
As a list of things to take this seems comprehensive, and easy to read too.

Good point, Wazungu.

I'll include your suggestion in the Essential Zero ('The Human Brain') section of my Entry.

OK Jeremy, it's up for editing, and therefore this thread should be considered 'closed' until it's moved into the forum for the article itself.

I think this is a totally satisfactory outcome, for a change...smiley - winkeye
