You write well. As a piece of writing, it's good. This, and your other stuff too.

If you intend a defence of lawyers, though, it's a bit too acerbic and trite. In fact it's expressed in just the style that persuades Joe Public that lawyers are self-serving and self-important.

So says I, anyhow. Then again, maybe I'm not capable of objectivity on the subject.

Hi Mike, your take on the compensation culture is interesting - is that how it's generally seen from within the leagal profession?

My experience of the results of it has been the unavailability of any insurance cover for certain types of fund raising event and the events being cancelled. Which doesn't seem like spin to me.

I've never thought of compensation culture as assuming dishonesty on the part of claimants, just an inability to recognise that sometimes it isn't anyones job to protect them from themselves and their own actions.

I didn't know Legal Aid was being phased out - wonder if there's any insurance cover available...

I always welcome comments. Thanks.

I'm not trying to defend lawyers in any way - I think that the legal profession has done itself enough damage without me adding to the problems. I'm simply trying to provoke thought (and perhaps the odd smile) at areas of legal practice that, perhaps, not everyone sees.

On the issue of insurance companies the facts are there for anyone to see if they look at the annual reports. Due to the fall in the stockmarket big insurers suffered massive losses. One of the more entertaining comments was that the massive hike in Employers Liability Premiums was down to the "money grabbing lawyers" rather than the insurance industry suffering because of the economy.
