Thank you so much for this - I have always wondered, as my family has heaps of crooked generations, and a lack of aunts, uncles and grandparents in some of them. F'r instance, my mother's uncle was our only grandparent-like person, and my cousins are 30 years older than me - and I've always wondered what my children should call them.

Thanks for your kind words. Drawing up a family tree is a useful start to these things. Especially if you aren't sure who the closest common ancestor is. Also the generation levels are easier to define.

In my family there is a 29 year gap from my sister's eldest daughter to my own youngest son. This year one of my neices has had a baby while a great neice (daughter of my nephew) will also have a child. Age is no guide at all to what the relationship is!
