I consider HTML as more of a data file, and the tags being akin to field separators and EOR markers, etc. It doesn't actually -do- anything, but tells a program what data to operate on.. also it can -call- other programs and even contain them (scripts). smiley - winkeye

Well I hadn't the faintest idea why you people even bothered with all that stuff about code. Sounded like a bunch of folk saying "MY way of solving a crossword is better than YOUR way." I'm off to the toys page now.

You solve the X-words best if you do the rows first, then the columns! ;p

You solve crosswords best if you up and down together. smiley - winkeye

My two cents, vi and emacs are good editors, simple ascii/text editors work, the rest just put in a bunch of crap and often don't put things where you thought they would.

If you're gonna use wysiwyg, why not just set up using one of those evil and annoying browser based editors like this one?

Hello, we seem to have a conflict of names here. I'M researcher number 35761, so I would guess I got here first? I think we'll have to find a way to distinguish ourselves if you also want to be known as SN.

Perhaps SN1 and SN2,

or SN[35761] and SN[44774]

or SN the Elder and SN the Younger

or SN the "defining physical characteristic" [short, witty, handsome, etc.] of course you would each have to choose a DIFFERENT defining physical characteristic

or maybe we could ALL become a SN...

Sorry 'bout that, hadn't noticed you around before. I'll see what I can do.
How 'bout if I use Spiny_Norman?

Well I'm willing to be just plain "SPINY", and if I stick with upper case, it'll be more obvious who's who. Sorry to be pedantic, but it's been my nickname since schooldays in 1972!

I think I read somewhere that the PTWVH may be considering exclusive nicknames, but at the rate of growth I can see where that might quickly become a problem. Of course, if everyone just kept their researcher number in their nicks (*ahem* smiley - winkeye) then there shouldn't be a problem. Perhaps that could be incorporated into the h2g2 code as a -means- of keeping nicks unique?

I don't think DNA would approve that idea, imagine DNA(42)!

Hasn't the "Sorry, someone's already called that" thing been introduced yet? Shame.
Nice topic drift being exhibited here.

Well it's just what all threads over a certain length seem to do. I don't think I've seen one yet that's stayed "on message". My theory is as a thread takes longer and longer to download, people start to think of other things they could add to their original idea for a reply. Sometimes they just end up putting something that's a complete tangent in there, like who decided cheese should be orange? If anyone can tell me of a lomg thread that hasn't collapsed under it's own weight, I'll go and look at it in awe, as in "Awe, look at that."

and a corollary is that all threads eventually include sex somewhere in the conversation...
