A Conversation for How do I...?

Wordprocessing question?

Post 1

I want to know how to make up a form, (which has around 5 columns, and lines/rows for text input with headings on the top and on the left hand side, in A4 format), and save it(along with the text headings, top and sides) as a template; so i can enter different data into it and print out copies-can anyone point me in the right direction?

I have tried and have made a few but they just dont come out right-other people have also done copies but although their forms looks ok-inputing data is a nightmare which doesnt work either-help!smiley - biggrin

Any help is very much appreciated. Thanks!smiley - oksmiley - smiley

Hi Lofty,
Could do with a bit more info really but if you're looking at just text input into the fields then a database template would be better than a word processor. If you're inputting figure's and formulaes[sp] then a spreadsheet would be more appropriate. smiley - ok

Hi ST it is a a form for inputing text, A4 sheet in landscape, divided into around 5 or more columns of different widths, all with text headings for each column, and lined (rows for inputing txt as lines on a normal sheet of ruled paper) , all in landscape position.

Thanks for your interest. smiley - ok

In that case a database template form something like Open Office or MS Office database or even MS Works.
Open office is a free open source application.

Data base templates are pretty straightforward to set up. smiley - ok

It's a long time since I did a form with fields to be filled in. The word processor I use is MS Word, and I would search the help files to find out how to create a "macro" if I wanted to remind myself how to do it. I don't use any other word processor but I imagine they can't all be exactly the same. Which one are you using?

I have a few to use; i have tried doing it with ; works 8, open office and msoffice2000

I gave up after spending ages in the wordprocessors fiddling about with tables and margin widths to get it about right on paper, only to have it do strange things when inputting data; i havnt tried doing it with a database yet though.

I am a complete newbe, or maybe that should be rube- but after seeing what someother peoples attempts which were not much better than mine- i thought am i missing something here; is there some dead easy way of doing a document template i dont know about?

I dont use a wordprocessor atall much, worpad is enough for me at present but, i shall do in the future, i still be scribbling on paper see.smiley - smileyI think i need to do a course or read up on this for the help is ok but takes a long time to come up with the answers i want .

If i done a Clait maybe, i could at least ask the tutor when i come unstuck? Good idea?

I wish I could remember how exactly. But I do remember it's not difficult. If you're using a version of Word, the help files are all there for you. Click on the help menu or F1 and it will tell how to do it. I think you have to use "Ask" fields if my memory serves. Then you record a macro so that when you open the template the cursor will jump to each field that has to be filled in, in turn. Have a go and see if you can do it. I have to go to bed now too. But let us know how you get on and if you have a problem, I'll dust off my brain and see if I can be a bit more precise tomorrow afternoon (ie I'll have a go at doing a form - good exercise).

Thanks Guys; i seem to have cracked it, definately not too difficult.
Definately inspired by your kind support!Thankssmiley - cheers

It is just a plain table which i have saved with a bit of text in headers etc, and all i do now is open it and type in whatever i want to the table-and save or print that; seems all ok-no hardship atall!
Nothing fancy, i dont need any data entered from anywhere but the keyboard , as and when , i am a happy bunny now. smiley - biggrin
