My iron is quite a good one and i dont want to scatch or ruin it . but it now has a big brown bit underneath from my house mate ironing something at the wrong heat, is there an easy way to clean it?

"Paper towels.

Toilet paper if no smiley - towels are available. Perhaps use a little alcohol, water or a drop of oil on the paper, use the iron with low temperature and high pressure on the paper. "

Titania (gone for lunch)

Toothpaste or silver polish or vinegar mixed with water are some of the tips I've found.

Feisor - -0- Generix I made it back - sortof ...

Bicarb and white vinegar?

I've used it on stainless steel saucepans - put a good load of bicarb on the stain and sprinkle on the white vinegar (it will fizz and foam) then rub it with a cloth.

It may take a few goes ...

smiley - goodluck

Cooked rhubarb will do the trick as well, but don't get it into the steam holes else you'll walk around smelling like a crumble smiley - yikes The same goes for Feisor's tip, only you'll smell like a chip shop smiley - rofl A thick paste of bicarbonate of soda made with a little water and rubbed on with a soft cloth when the iron is warm should help.

Alternatively there are several proprietary iron cleaners about, but rather over-priced to my mind.

Great-Great-Great Granny used to clean her sad iron (flat iron in certain parts of the UK) with candlewax and blotting paper but I don't think that'd work on a steam iron smiley - winkeye

Magwitch - My name is Mags and I am funky.

What's wrong with a white-bottomed (ie. non-stick) scourer? Low heat on iron, loads of cold water...

Bagpuss

I used some dilute Flash All Purpose on ours. Doesn't seem to have done any harm.
