How do I ... embed an external link ?

Post 1

Rev Nick { Only the dead are without fear }

My PS previously had a valid link to the CIA Fact Book. They have since moved to from https://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/ca.html to https://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/ca.html ... Note the "https" difference? Somehow, that extra 's' makes it concatenate the whole string to the lead of ..../dna/brunel/etc, making it worthless. Without the 's', it goes to a wrong location.

Any help appreciated.

Mine still works (the 'Learn about something from a disreputable source' link on my PS).

That too is an "http://" link. It seems the "https://" variant doesn't agree with the LINK HREF bit. And in my case, the two versions take you to very different places.

If you follow your link, take a look at the actual destination you arrive at ... https ... Mine with the country specific bits just doesn't go.

Is that the Canadian link? I see what you mean. No ideas I'm afraid. Maybe something to post in the technical wotsit? http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/brunel/Feedback-Technical

Have you tried the real HTML "A" tag instead of Guide-ML "LINK"?

I'm sorry, I know nothing of HyperText Mark-up Language beyond the name. Could you spell that out a bit, please?

It's the real tag to which the BBC's dna software eventually translates its own fake tag.

Here's a basic guide to mark-up (on the World Wide Web Consortium's site), including the A (address) tag for links to other pages/sites:

I just tried the and , as seemed to be described in that tutorial. Same concatenation to the .../dna/h2g2/brunel/http:// stuff as using the thing.

One day, I gotta take some vacation and learn this blamed stuff.

Well, it's still possible the BBC broke something rather than you getting it wrong (I don't use https links much to have noticed any change). In which case it's a matter of fooling the software into doing it another way. Eg I'm not sure how long things like tinyurl would last (or even whether the double re-direction would work anyway).

Having played with my test page, it's definitely not just you. It is the BBC staff who've broken it since you last had it working. It also looks, from previous links I had there, that they've broken something else (though not anything which should matter to anyone).

Are you going to raise it as a bug then?

Is there a route, besides Technical Feed-Back, to bring it to 'their' attention?

If Jim Lynn's paying attention, that would be enough. However, the official reporting page is: <./>Feedback-Bugs</.>

Okay, so it IS something that's been battered about, ... As much as 3 years ago. If it hasn't been met yet, I'll guess that it either won't be, or is not worth their time. Hmmmm.

Thanks for the info.
