Hello. I am keen to see this Egg Entry make some Progress, so hereby am subscribing.

So, are you sure a Slide Rule is the tool you are looking for? I think some sort of mechanical gauge is more appropriate.

I hope you don't think I am intruding.

Hi DMT,not an intrusion as all comments are more than welcome.A gauge as you say is needed but i couldn`t remember what it was called (didn`t do owt like that at school),but what type of gauge is it??.Al i know is that it is gradiated in millimetres has two prongs hanging down at one end and slides along opening a gap in which to place the egg, posibly the next best thing to a micrometer. Any ideas???
thanx

Hi Batwing,

The tool you are looking for is indeed called a micrometer. They come in two varieties, internal and external. The internal variety is used for measuring things like cylinder bores. The type you need for your eggs is an external micrometer.

Hi, I'm also searching for the right boiled egg smiley - biggrin

I'm not a native english speaking person, but I don't think that a micrometer is an appropriate device. What you are looking for is probably called calliper gauge or sliding caliper.

I also would think it would be better to measure the diameter of the egg. Because finally it's all something about heat-transfer and therefore it's more important to know the shortest distance between the egg shell an the geometric central point. In addition to this it depends on the temperature of the water and the core temperature of the egg ... (slightly remembering universities thermodynamic courses)

well I know this a bit scientistic smiley - winkeye and maybe all this hasn't a big influence on your measurements smiley - erm

AXR smiley - cheers

whatever it`s called, i only know it works.try it out and let me know how you go on with the instructions i gave, you may be surprised, but if you like your egg with the consistency of 3 day old porridge i suggest you boil slightly longer.

Yes, mabey you'd like to include what consistency of the egg you're aiming for -is that slurpy soft egg or more waxlike?
People tend to be very finicky when it comes to breakfast eggs, as I've learned through recurring ordeals of having friends over for breakfast, so stating what the aim is may help.
I'll try it out tho soon as I get a sliding caliper smiley - smiley
