copyRight
AH! me harties!
It be a good old time for the copyright to be discussed! Huh! You sees that it be a devilish dervish of the deep, worse than the giant octopus, worse than a kracken, worse than great cthulhu him (or her) self! Its copyRight!
Not copyright, but copyRight. That is the idea of protecting something for only self interest reasons. Now as much as this practice is good, it can get out of hand, and in this day and age we haves this problem of copyingRighting something that really doesn't need it. In fact people are so worried about some of there ideas being stolen that the amounts spent on copyright is growing buy a massive amount every year! This can't simply go on! The problem is that we restrict the product. But how?
Well copyrighting something costs money. This is simple to understand, we need to go through a system to make sure no one else has done it already, this system is maintained by a collective of non profit orgs (including the ISO, UN, and a few others) as well as a few private industry people who overall do a similar job, but ensure more protection for more money. The ICA allows certain copyrights for free, but they don't last long (depending on what they are anything from 1-8 years) for no money at all, then its prices index depending on the product and the length of the copyright. Also if the product changes the copyright needs to be updated. The product may change in any way to cause the copyright to be invalid. Also some things are to universal to be held in copyright, for example you can't copyright a CD, as its a universal product that is used in any number of industries, but you can copyright a special sort of CD that does something fancy (like its made of chocolate). The costs involved are mostly legal and admin costs, the authority has to make sure that everyone keeps to the copyright and maintains the standards for which keep the wheels in motion. Its also there necks on the line if something goes wrong, so a bit of money goes into insurance as well. This process is the process that I agree with. Its fine, the system works and is well maintained (or has been better maintained recently).
There is however a new phenomena and that is copyRight, this is were by a org will purposefully and intentionally have its product aggressively defended. An example would be from my MP3 rant whereby we have the RIAA doing nasty things to old grannies and kids! people who have no means of actually defending themselves or paying for legal costs, let alone be aware that there actions are wrong. But no, the RIAA tries to lock them away anyway.
So what is the solution? Well part of it is happening now with rise of central non profit organisations such as wikipedia, h2g2, and a few others that allow there services for free under a system called copy left. That is you can copy the work, as long as you say you did copy it (giving thanks) and were you copied it from. If you don't then you can then be sued. The system works under what is called the GNU licensing agreement, if you use any of the text, or any of the code (in the case of a program) you should at least acknowledge that it was used in the creation of the work. If you use it to make a product that sells for money you get publicly shunned, then lynched, and maybe money as well. But it comes at a price. Everyone who used to respect you, now hates you, and you become a landlubber!

Yeah, I know I let the account get dusty... But who knows, maybe I'll get something edited this time.

My Understanding was, that if I wrote something, it was automaticly copyright for 50 years + life (or 70 where I'm going). You've confused me.... Little Help?

You missed the point on this page were it said "I do not necessarily know what I am ranting about". Copyright needs to be properly protected to get the full 50 years rights on it, you don't get "automatic" copywright, the closet you can come to is putting "Copyright XXXX by " and get a 2 year protection for free, you have to pay and register for the 50 year thing.
