It's the start of a major holiday this week- Thanksgiving- and here in the US it's the more or less "official" start of the holiday season and the ending of another year.
I look forward to an early office closing on Wednesday (though when you get in as early as I do, 3pm is hardly an early dismissal), then Thursday and Friday off. K and I will be heading over to my grandmother's to have dinner with my gram, my uncle, my dad's cousin, her ex-hubby (they are still very dear friends) and their daughter, who's about five years younger than I. I'll be preparing the green bean casserole and I'm also bringing a large-ish acorn squash.
We don't have much planned for Black Friday, which apparently starts the holiday shopping season. I imagine this year there will be more advertising and all sorts of sales to try to entice people to waste tons of money even though the economy's not so great. The only shopping we have planned for the weekend would be groceries- and hopefully the day after a gorge-fest, the store won't be too crowded.
So I'll have a four-day weekend, which is always nice.
I made a red dragon bean pie for dinner yesterday, and we did pick up one holiday gift for K's little niece and nephew- a set of alphabet blocks with the braille and sign language symbols for each letter along with the normal letters and numbers. They seemed nice and educational, since the kids are three and six years old.
That, and I succumbed to peer pressure and ordered the complete series of Blake's 7 on DVD, from an eBay seller in Australia, for about a third of what it cost to order new from Sendit.com or Amazon UK. Please, someone who's seen it, tell me it doesn't suck...
Meanwhile, no more shopping for myself till after the stupid holidays.
I've already arranged to be off work December 24th and 26th, so I have another nice long holiday to look forward to. The week of New Year's I just can't manage any other time off besides the 1st.
And it's starting to feel almost wintry around here. We had a bit of sleet this morning and I finally had to dig out a jacket. A pullover sweater isn't quite enough any more.

Now I've said that, I see from the weather forecast that it's going to get up to around 5°C today and I'll be uncomfortably warm with a jacket on. Typical!

Thank you, Lil. I hope I do a good job of demonstrating my gratitude toward my friends every day of the year, but Thanksgiving is a good time to remind myself how lucky I am.

Well, if by "suck" we mean low-budget special effects, rubber BEMs, cardboard sets, etc, then I'm sure to love it- as long as the characters are mostly well-developed. In other words, as long as it's So Bad It's Good.
I had a 10% off coupon, so it wound up costing me about $125, not bad for ten discs and 52 episodes.
No idea why I jumped so quickly to buy it, though, when we've still got a few dozen classic Who discs to get through; we've only just watched the first Pertwee episode. At this rate we won't have time to do anything other than watch Sci-Fi programs, ever again. Who's gonna clean my house?

The theme tune is one of the great things about Blake's Seven. Though it's conveniently tucked into the middle of "Music Was My First Love" by Jonh Miles.

I'll look forward to hearing it. The show sounds really .
Meanwhile, all of the lovely folks who offered to send me some veggie stock cubes... we were at Whole Foods on Saturday, and found some low sodium ones there. They're in small packs of eight cubes each, tucked way out of the way on the top shelf. But they'll do when I am out of my homemade stock- like now.
Found lots of other good stuff on Saturday. Including some fresh figs! Now I have to figure out how to enjoy them- I've had dried figs and fig preserve but have never tried fresh ones. Yum!

Happy holidays
Blake's 7 is The effects are often laughable, and the costumes (and haircuts) are very 70s, but most of the acting is high quality and the storylines and characters are well crafted. The show also has a sort of bleak ruthlessness at times. I don't want to give you any preconceptions so I won't talk about favourite characters/episodes/moments etc but it'd be great to hear what you think when you've watched them all PC.
Enjoy

Sometimes laughable effects, cheesy 70s costumes/haircuts, quality acting, good storylines and character development... and a bit bleak?
Sounds like *just* my thing, then.
I'm wondering how long it will take to arrive, via air mail, from Australia. I think the last thing I posted to Australia took around a week or so. At least this guy doesn't use surface mail- I might have it in time for next year. Once it arrives I expect we'll need a couple of months to watch them all?

Something about figs...
http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/mostof_figs.shtml
The Italian way is nice, pick a nice hard cheese (vegan of course), fresh figs (room temp, not from the fridge) and some lovely honey........it's all very scrummylicious!

The perfect excuse to try out the vegan gouda and blue I've been wanting to try. Thanks for the link, and for the suggestion.
K's got himself some nice buttermilk blue cheese (made without animal rennet- he avoids buying that for my sake ) and some kind of cheese torte made from Stilton and Colby, with spring onions and sage. I bet between us we could make a meal of it.
I may want to buy some more and try using them in some recipes, too. Apparently they're good on pizza, and I do one with artichoke hearts, roasted red pepper and a balsamic vinegar glaze that might be nice with a bit of roasted fig.

Ooh, another vote of confidence. Now I'm really looking forward to its arrival!
Would you be up for another game of lexulous (though I won't be in front of a computer for a good six or seven hours tomorrow?).
Friday we're planning to go to see a film with one of our friends- a Swedish vampire film called "Let The Right One In". Sounds

I'd love a review on that movie, PC. I've been thinking about going all autumn, but never got around to. It has got good reviews, and so has the book which was published a few year ago.

That settles it- I definitely want to go see it now. Maybe we can work the details out with the friend who wants to go, and I can purchase all of our tickets in advance.
It doesn't have a wide theatrical release here- in Chicago, it's only at one location (which runs a lot of foreign and "art" films).
I'll write a review here for sure!
