Why is it that whenever I get a long holiday weekend, something weird always happens to make it less fun than it might have been?
Friday night K had a gig to play; I was feeling rather tired and got myself to bed on the early side. Saturday morning, I woke up feeling like death warmed over. Fever, excruciating headache, body aches, chills, and sick to my stomach. I couldn't even keep water in me. Spent most of the day sleeping. What a waste!
Sunday I woke feeling better, if a little shaky. It was quite chilly (around -14°C for a high), but we still managed a quick trip to the grocery store. When we got back, I polished some of the stainless steel in the kitchen (toaster oven, trash can, etc). Apparently, some overspray got onto the floorboards, and it's as slick as a skating rink in front of the fridge. Poor Herman can barely get to his food and water dishes without falling over.
So, I'd made a little plan to wash the kitchen floor today. No biggie- the rest of the floors are fine. Riiiiight. Toward the end of the evening last night, K was snacking on some potato chips. On my way to the kitchen to refill my water glass, I thought I'd put the bag of chips away. When I picked it up, for some strange reason, it flipped over in my hand, dumping its contents onto the living room floor. Although the chips themselves were promptly swept up, they left behind a rather large greasy spot (and people actually *eat* those things? ). So, I get to wash the living room floor, too. And since the dining room and hallway are between the living room and kitchen, there's really no sense in not washing the whole floor. Argh. So much for a relaxing, lazy weekend!
Once these floors are washed, I'm not doing any other housework today. Except for the laundry. And tidying the bathroom. And unloading the dishwasher. And...

Yup - sometime when the chips are down, the steaks are too high. ()
Never mind...if you have any appetite, you can console yourself by browsing the rediscovered recipes here: http://flamingpie.memebot.com/PieCentral.htm
I didn't know this lot was still on teh interwebs.

Yum, yum, YUM!
I definitely have an appetite again now. Maybe I'll find something on there for tonight's dinner, if I have all the ingredients at hand.

Those sound like some pretty greasy chips to leave a mark, almost as greasy as british chips (fries). I can't think of any british crisps (chips) that would be as greasy as that except maybe kettle chips (crisps)
French fries: are they actually french? I'm not sure, but chips (crisps) are. Actually french, I mean well, invented by the actual french well, one of them, anyway, invented chips as a joke I might start calling crisps French chips
Glad you're feeling better. I love that little point when you've been ill but now you're better but still able to remember how minging the being ill was.

There you go, I thought pc was talking about crisps - called chips in 'German', and I think in the USA, too.
OOoh, and we do have a great entry about potato crisps:

Yeah, I meant what UKnians call "crisps". Not that I don't know of anyplace to obtain greasy fries/chips. I guess I shouldn't give away the brand name of chips/crisps that left the spot on the floor (though it was more like little droplets, except for the bits that got on the newspapers). They might sue me for knocking their product.
That *is* a great entry!
Laundry's done, dishes put away, bathroom cleaned and floors washed. I've been productive.
You know what I love... when you've been sick, but you're starting to feel better, and you get a *really good* night's sleep. Super, restful, snuggly sleep.

I knew PC was talking about Maybe I should have put (crisps) after my first "chips"
I didn't know we had a flipin' smiley.
Do you ever get that thing where you sleep but it feels as if no time has passed at all? I did that with a 24 hour mega snooze once. My dad woke me up with a broom (because of the height of my cabin bed). It took an awful lot of convincing to get me to belive I'd even slept at all because the clocks were all at the same time as when I'd got into bed

Thanks for the plug Bel.
I hate doing floors PC but that because apart from the kid I have two and a
Come to think of it ...... I hate doing housework.
Maybe I'll just stick around here a while instead.

I loved Fizzy's entry! Bel knows where all the good entries are.
I have only one man and one . I can only imagine the devastation a kid and a couple s add.
While I really, really hate housework, I'm also pretty set on having a clean, tidy home. So my inherent laziness and my tidiness constantly fight each other... eventually, tidiness wins out, I get a momentum going, and there you have it.
Got some macaroni & cheese baking for K's dinner, and thus ends my wonderful Extra Day Off. It'll be months before the next paid holiday... unless we have one Ive forgotten about in February, we won't have another till the end of May. Thank goodness I have three weeks vacation time to use this year.

Oh I'm not very good at the housekeeping lark either, so I just do a massive clean up once a week, then I'm exhausted the rest of the week.
We have St Patrick's Day off and Easter to look forward to in March this year.

Oy. Back to work today. It's supposed to be rather cold all week. And I have this huge, boring project to work on that I've been putting off and putting off... sigh.

Huge, boring projects... that sounds familiar. Can you break it into chunks, or is everything too interconnected for that?

Glad you're feeling better (ish)! Don't go overboard with the housework, dust is rarely fatal, however, greasy floors can be! I've been trying to just do little bits each day, in preparation for the influx of visitors; main priority was unblocking bathroom sink, happily for me, i have Dubman around, who sorted it in around 2 minutes, plus he washes dishes without being asked, which is very nice!
Just asked Dubman about the French crisps/chips issue, since he's lived in France & Ireland....his best guess is that "chips" as in "long sticks of potatoes, deep fried" were probably "invented" by Les Oirish, since we do tend to eat potatoes in some form or another with most meals (unless there happens to be a potato famine going on: don't get me started on that one) but the English nicked the idea, then exported it to USA. Belgium is famous for "Moules frites" too (mussels & chips), so presumably they had a hand in it too, or nicked the idea.
...i reckon were a spin off from "real" chips, it would be logical if you had just a few small spuds left, but plenty of oil & great for a travelling snack en route into battle!
I read somewhere that USA cowboys invented the beefburger, 'cos they stuck a steak under their saddle whilst riding the range...over to USAnians to debunk this myth!

Huge, boring project = 121 individual information returns for the US Census Bureau's Department of Commerce. One for each taxpayer identification number our organization operates under. They can be filed online, and look to need about 20-30 minutes each. I'm still waiting for my boss to get the figures to me so I can input everything. I'm sure it can be broken into 121 smaller chunks, but the deadline for filing is February 12.
I got a fair amount of housework done yesterday, actually. I cleaned the top and front of the stove, the tile backsplash behind the sink/stove/counters, did laundry, cleaned floors, and washed down the fronts of all the kitchen cabinets. I think that's reasonably productive.
