Can we throw tomatoes at people in the real world when they tell us to 'smile'? Especially when they say it so condescendingly while pushing up the corners of their mouth?
Was feeling a bit hassled on the weekend and a woman at work came up to the desk and asked for help. I helped her, and she thanked me and then told me to smile (while doing the mouth thing). In my head I grumbled *Bugger off, old bat.* She then told me how tired I looked, like I really needed to hear that! Then she said I should smile again. I deliberately didn't. Why should I smile, to make her feel better? How is that going to help me?

If she does it again, couldn't you tell her: 'Yes, I'm tired. Tired of being patronised by s like you'?
Or words to that effect?

I really should, shouldn't I. 'Cause it's not likely I'll have a tomato handy anyway.
Bet I won't though.
