How NOT to stop your CPU cooling fan making noises
Mu Beta Started conversation Jul 25, 2004
Having located the source of the irritating buzz within my PC, I took the cover off and had a poke around with my thumb.
Unfortunately, I didn't take the precaution of turning it off first.
FZZPT! BANG! FZZ! ZZZZIP!
It still seems to be working OK, though, although what little there is of my hair is standing on end.

I am not going to torture one of my friends like that, thank you very much.
Blimey, there's a lot of capacitors in this thing...

From experience I find that you need to worry when your PC is NOT making an annoying humming sound.
The last time mine fell silent it was because the power unit had blown and the temperature inside the box went off the scale. Fortunately it was still within warrantee by about 3 days, so I got all the melted bits fixed for free.

Temperature is now a primary concern of mine, because I have pulled the plug on aforementioned fan.

That will mean that the fan that sits over the processor will be working nineteen to the dozen to keep up. Unfortunately it won't be able to do it and eventually your system will crash

**plugs CPU cooler fan back in**
**gets zapped by capacitor again**
And it's still making bloody noises.

Hang on a moment. You mean you were fiddling with the fan on the CPU, not the one on the power supply?
Blimey...
I recall once seeing some mpegs of what happens when you remove the cooling system from a processor. The general result was a sizzling noise, some flames and a puff of smoke

There are two fans on my motherboard. A 60mm one on a ruddy great heat sink over what I should assume is the CPU, and a smaller 40mm one over a smaller heatsink. It's the smaller one that is giving me gyp.

Take all the fans out; move over to a liquid nitrogen cooling system, you know it makes sense, and its great for cooling down too
