Apart from the many obvious and not so obvious uses of a towel in the physical world, towels are also useful mentally. For example:
-Having a towel with you, you know that, if an annoying situation were to arise, the towel could be used to escape/ resolve/ignore it. 
-If you are traveling alone, you can think of the towel as a companion 
-Knowing where your towel is is a sign of the ability to handle difficult things, such as navigating airports in countries whose native language you have no knowledge of. 
-Wearing a towel over a shoulder is a fashion statement that shows you are independent of the norm
