I've not been too well with my chest for a couple of weeks as some of you know. Just got back from a second visit to hospital via ambulance. I saw my gp this morning who sent me home, then not even 2 hours later i needed an ambulance. The paramedic said the dr shouldve called me one at the surgery by the state of me.

Anyway, i'm ok, getting the right treatment no that i shouldve been for weeks and at home again. Ive been referred to a chest consultant to check me over properly and im to stop smoking..now!

'chews nicorette gum'

think ill have to start with cutting down greatly but im really gonna try

Anyways sorry to those i just disappeared on on msn earlier

2legs - Hey, babe, take a walk on the wild side...

Sure should be! have you tried cutting down by just buying a packet of ten fags, and not allowing any more than that one packet a day: having the limited number of ciggys in front of you might help 'ration' them out? smiley - erm Just an idea don't know how well it would work; I'm always struggling myself to keep my smoking down to a sensible level smiley - erm currently about 15 or thereabouts a day rahter than my normal 10 to 12 smiley - bigeyes so I'm having a bit of a cut back thing at the moment too smiley - yikes mind... I don't find it too difficult cutting down that four or five a day so long as I'm not drinking/visiting the pub... smiley - yikessmiley - alesmiley - drool and I'm having a bit of an abstinance from booze for the next week or two smiley - wow

The experience of stopping smoking taught me two things at least. apart from the ridiculous waste of hard earned cash.

You definitely can not give up by degrees, it is all or nothing. So you should not make the attempt until you are completely determined.
The best time is when you have a heavy cold or are not feeling very well, then when you definitely do not want a smoke, force yourself and smoke the blasted lot.

The feeling of "What the hell have I been doing to my health for so long?" should retain your determination for at least a week and you have stopped smoking.

If the craving returns, buy a packet of Potters Herbal cigarettes and try to smoke them, you will have do that in the fresh air because objections are strong even from friends who do not normally complain.

Persevere for one week and you will never want to see a cigarette again, to boost that great feeling count the cash that you have saved already.

Then about six months later have a test, just see how much fitter and faster you are. You will be amazed, even while smoking at a young age I was swift of foot, but six months after quitting I was much faster and remained quite speedy right into retirement.

Please try for your own sake and family health too,
Cheers H.

Sorry to butt in but I heard Terri mention my name...

Two things I implemented when I finally quit- and it is absolutely true that it must be all or nothing- were the purchase of a brand I didn't like, and developing the habit of brushing my teeth before lighting up any and every time I wanted a smoke (much like smoking with a cold, it makes it taste all funny). The flavor was so disgusting that I never even finished that pack- I'd light one, take a puff, gag, and be done with the wretched thing.

Incidentally, the asthma attacks were a bit worse for a while, as my lungs purged themselves of all that yuck. But I feel a helluva lot better now.

Just seen this Sereph, hope you're feeling a bit better now anywaysmiley - hug

Got a bit of a deja vu thing going on here, I think your quit smoking thread was one of the first I posted to last yearsmiley - biggrin
I'm still smoking like a thing possessed, tried every and all methods to quit. All very successful until I either have a day when I can't think of anything except smoking, or, partake of a little drinkie poossmiley - silly

I think, and so I've been told, that it does take a fair few goes to give up completely, and it's a case of trial and error finding a way to give up that works for you. The worst part of giving up smoking, for me, is the sheer terror of not smoking, and I hate that something, anything has that kind of hold over me, being a bit of a control freak myselfsmiley - weird

The worst bit about this, is I nursed and watched my mum die in my arms as a result of smoking, she contracted lung cancer, then brain cancer. It was an ugly, painful time and by no means a peaceful death. I don't understand how *I* can still be smoking after that little 'life lesson'. Still one day, hopefully?

However, I went along to my local Superdrug and they run a smoking cessation thingy, give you everything you need to quit and for however long it takes, and were jolly nice and supportive about it too, it certainly helps that you have to check in each week and blow into a thingy that tells them if you've cheatedsmiley - blush

Sincerely wish you the very, very best with giving upsmiley - hug
