A Conversation for CELTIC DEVON
St Michael's island
Ozzie Exile Started conversation Jun 28, 2010
Many know of the strange similarity between St Michael's Mount in Cornwall and Mont Saint-Michel on the Normandy/Brittany border.
Both are islands connected to the mainland only at low tide, both were monasteries and both were dedicated to Saint Michael.
Perhaps not so well known is Devon's equivalent.
Burgh Island off Devon's South coast is similarly connected to the mainland only at low tide. Its orginal name was Saint Michael's Island and it is believed that it was occupied as a monastery many centuries ago. The remains of St Michael's chapel still exist on the island, but the monastery is long demolished.
