Hello there good sir (as I have now fully established, sorry about the confusion earlier in the day!!) Quite glad I made the wee mistake though as it has led me to a great many interesting conversations. smiley - winkeye

So here I am, following your advice. I am still in the Early Learning stages of h2g2 so if you've any wee tips for me they'd be much appreciated...

You're very fond of the 'wee' adjective, aren't you.

Well, let's see - I assume you're familiar with <./>askh2g2</.> and Peer Review (<./>RF1</.&gtsmiley - winkeye, although PR's not to everyone's taste.

If you're into quizzes, you can't do better than subscribe to A416783, h2iq - h2g2's premier quiz - be warned, it gets very competitive. Sadly Greebo, the cat (well, maybe) that runs it is off sick at the minute. The associated F51431?thread=138209 thread throws up more protracted brainteasers every once in a while on a get-it-right-ask-the-next-one basis.

Dropping into random conversation is generally a good way to meet people. The 'Friends' list is a new, convenient way of spying on people's journals (although, be warned, some people take to expressing some deeply intimate and uncomforting things in their journals. Other people - like me - just treat it as a place to write stuff where no-one else goes). If you want to know where stuff's happening right now, drop by the <./>info</.> page to find out.

Learning a bit of GuideML to spruce up you personal space is a good way to get more people dropping round. I went there trying to learn a bit about you, but there's not much yet - I'm sure that'll change.smiley - winkeye

A187229 should see you right on the ML front, and I've found the lists of Likes/Dislikes, although very corny, are a great way to kcik off conversations.

What else? Make sure you get your h2g2 code (A863516) sorted after you've been around for a while. If you don't like whatever everyone else is doing - start it yourself! I did, with the h2g2 code, the tuit store (A732241) and assorted other stuff. Or try writing something for <./>ThePost</.>

Phew! That's a fair bit to be going on with. So what about you? What's so bad about this job, then? I'm sure you can't be worse off than me - single, unemployed and living in Scunthorpe.smiley - sadface

sorry! didnt realise i'd used 'wee' more than once - i'm usually quite careful to vary my speech....
I am indeed quite fond of it, but i s'pose that's what you get when you're from norn iron.smiley - biggrin
And I am single, employed in a very boring job, and living in Belfast. I would say we're probably even. Although Belfast is actually quite good, as I have found since I relocated from Edinburgh.
I am trying to save the pennies for the Big Trip though, so socialising has been limited of late.
Exciting work Christmas do next week to be looking forward to.
It'd maybe be good if I worked with anybody under the age of 40 or my work wasn't 35 miles from Belfast. Think I'll be avoiding the smiley - ale and heading back into the city fairly early.....
Are you looking for a job?

Er...very much so. I'm quite excited actually, because I've just received four trial briefs for a scriptwriting job I've applied for - so I'm going to have to write four scripts in about a week.smiley - yikes

Like you - still trying to get over the fact that I've graduated and left all my friends in Birmingham.

Very cool!
By the way, I'm not really getting anywhere with a lot of your advice. Technophobia is a disease and i'm trying to overcome it!
I can't figure out how to brighten up my space...smiley - sadface
Also don't yet know how to subscribe to things - do I just post to a conversation?
Sorry to be such a dumbass! I think the problems must mainly be due to the fact that it's nearly hometime and i've been staring at this screen all day. smiley - online2long

Subscribing's dead easy. All conversations and entries have a little link down the bottom which says 'click here to subscribe' or 'click here to be notified of new posts' or something like that. Just click on that link and you're subscribed.smiley - ok

There's lots of good stuff here!
If you mean for my personal space, I'm chipping away at it in between bursts of actually doing some work. Some vaguely important stuff to get done just now, which makes a nice change. It's no less boring, mind you.

If you spend long enough around here, you'll eventually find your niche - everyone does.

And as I said, if you can't find a niche, set one up yourself - Nyssa did pretty much that by setting herself up as hootoo's new-age agony aunt - and she's still a relative newbie.smiley - winkeye

The Personal Space is starting to look better - the time'll come when you have to much going on to keep it to a reasonable length, you'll see.
