Hi! It's good to see you've joined h2g2! I am (or rather, am pending to be) an ACE, or Assistant Community Editor, my job (or rather, future job)is to make you feel comfortable settling in to h2g2. I would like to point out that this isn't an automated message, as these are sometimes mistaken for.
A few things reccomend to do to start off would be to check out a few clubs and societies at A660340, but remember that many clubs and societies that you might be interested in aren't listed here. The best way to find these is to jump into a conversation that sounds interesting, click on the name of someone who looks interesting, and mostly likely they will belong to some group or another that you'll enjoy.
Perhaps after you've settled in a little more, you might want to volounteer for a position like ACE, Scout, Guru, Sub-Editor, or Community Artsist. If so, the page with the information and links is at A541027.
Remember, this is a friendly place!

Hello Abi
Hello Andrew
IMO there's not really much there to help a newbie. But then, I've been to your space, seen your ACE Welcome Post, not much in that either. (maybe there was a reason for that, possible you were 'found late' and had already contributed to a lot of conversations)
It might be an idea to take a look at <./>newusers</.> click on a few of them, see what links the ACEs' use. Most of them use one of these two help pages Felsors A719840 or Rocket Man's A725500 (though don't copy the other ACEs' Welcomes, get some ideas & do your ACE Welcome in your own style).
The Smileys & Clubs links are useful.
I'd scrap the third paragraph about being a volunteer, I'd imagine that's that last thing on a newbies mind. Then again, it might be useful to know about the different Volunteers & what they do.
oh, and the 'soon to be' confuses the post, forget it's Abi, imagine your posting to a newbie.
Good Luck

No Andrew, not terrible at all if I gave that impression.
Just needs a little 'tweaking' IMO
Anyway, I'm not Abi, I'm giving you what IMO is constructive advice, (up to you, whether or not you take any notice of it ).
I'm not trying to put you down, or put you off.

I'll expand a bit on what I meant:

That's your first paragraph with the 'soon to be' removed. IMO a very good start.
The Volunteers page is not an obvious choice, although maybe worded differently, as a page to find out what Volunteers there are and what they do, a very useful link
again, My intention was to help you, not offend you.

Andrew, I've just re-read your (quite good, IMO, now I've got a clearer head) Welcome, there was a chunk of it I didn't notice. The part about click on other researchers names, really useful most of us stumble on that by accident.
Abi, I made a right 'hash' of trying to help Andrew, maybe I had one too many last night.
(note to myself - Read properly, don't skim)

Thanks Andrew
I'll still slap my wrist for my first reply to your Welcome. (and Abi is welcome to slap my other wrist. )
My last advice to you, then I'll shut up
Re-read the above posts, take the advice you agree with, ignore what you don't agree with, and re-write your Welcome. It's ok to do more than one, better to practice here than on a newbie.

I would like to note that this will be my final post for about a week, following which i hope there will be a response from abi (must be very busy being an italic). below is a rewrite of my welcome post.

I see that you've already changed around your Personal Space. If you really want to make it shine, visit either the GuideML Clinic at A187229, or the "Spicing Up Your Page" entry at A690518.

I haven't forgotten you or your application for ACE status. I am sorry, but I have been on sick leave for the last couple of days. I am back now and will just check that there are no other ACEs who want to comment on your application.

Just a couple of things.
1) I'd hold fire on suggesting new people might like to join one of the volunteer groups (albeit at some time in the future). Abi would probably know better than me, but many new users see the groups as having 'status', and want to be part of it - before they even know their way around the site. If they hang around the site for long enough (which isn't really very long at all), they'll find out about them anyway. You could always tell them later as well.
2) It may be more 'newbie-friendly' to use named entries where possible - <./>GuideML-Clinic</.>, <./>volunteers</.>, <./>dontpanic</.>, <./>smileys</.>. There's a whole list of named entries at (surprisingly enough) <./>namedentries</.>
Hope this doesn't sound too harsh...
