A garden for bees
Vip Started conversation Jul 2, 2009
At the moment my garden is a bit of a blank slate; we have a long lawn flanked by an empty border. In the empty border I would love to put flowers that attract and are good for bees.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I saw some bees going wild over lavender yesterday evening so that's a good start!

We have Lavender and (blue) Geraniums - the bees love 'em!

Ooh, good good. I have a buddlia (so?) right at the back, along with a clemetis (sp?) that's braving the chain link fence between us and the cricket ground. Fingers crossed I haven't killed them yet!

I think it's the plants with single flowers that insects go for. Those they can get into the middle of rather than the showy double flowered varieties.
Have you had a look at the wildlife gardening entries written by Mina?

I've just been harvesting the crop of bluebells seeds from my bed underneath the magnolia tree.
Current tally is 258 - and there are dozens of pods yet to crack open.
I'm keeping them all dry and indoors because I don't want them going into the soil and germinating until I've had a chance to renovate the area, put down some new soil and sand. etc.
Also I want to be a bit clearer about planting this year so I'm going to use a grid.
