Ipod is connected.
Itunes is syncing Ipod.
Itunes has crashed while syncing.
Ipod has been disconnected from the interface, but not from my computer.
Eject ipod.
Does nothing.
Eject Ipod again
Still nothing.
Initiate infinite loop of doing bugger all.
Initiate Richard looses patience application.
Unplugs ipod.
You have removed a device without ejecting it. The world could end.
Reconnects Ipod.
Itunes has detected this ipod has become corrupted (no files appear or some marking a point at some point in the upload stream when it stopped uploading and didn't bother saying so - now the only option is to restore to factory settings.
So I say yes.
Ipod is restored* all my files are gone again, drive is pristine and empty.
Ipod is connected.
Itunes is syncing Ipod.
Itunes has crashed while syncing usually on the last but one podcast.
Wash cycle, rinse, spin, repeat.
I have now decided I will take my ipod which functions just fine with the playlists, videos and podcasts I managed to upload this time around.
However, I will be unable to upload any future songs not without being informed how corrupted my drive is and how I must first delete everythign and run the guantlet of uploading everythign again only to have it crash again.
This all started when Itunes updated itself to the new version. Funny that.
*sometimes it crashes while restoring and brings up error messages about that.

Hmmm. This is similar to an occurrence with my iPhone last week
Although I got it sorted in the end...

Hi Clive
The usual questions sort of ask themselves...
Which Mac and OS?
Which iPod and software version?

Apple seem to be straying worryingly into the path of "just release it, let the users find the bugs". Here's some possible fixes:

I didn't have to look very hard, all I did was plug the damn thing in.
I'll take a look tomorrow. Cheers HD.

Hi Clive
In addition have you looked at Apple Support - http://www.apple.com/uk/support/ipodclassic/
and Discussions - http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=204
You can always ask the question and someone will answer.

Further still, do you manually manage your iPod? I do because the music and other stuff on the Mac in iTunes includes all the music that me and my other half have and we don't want to mix our play lists, podcasts, videos etc. I can't stand some of her music and vice versa.
In addition I have an iPod touch that I use as an electronic diary for w*rk and some of the Apps and all the appointments, contacts etc only need to sync with that device.

Yes I do manually manage my ipod, I don't necessarily want every music file and playlist I've ever made on there.
As it relates to this problem, I've noticed, after the full factory setting reset (when it works) and I have to rename my ipod and select how I want to manage my files. If I forget and I let it go automatically, it seems to crash almost instantly when I start updating.
It's say 13 of 2756 loading - and will sit there.
By the time the next reset and wipe rolls around it will have turned out to not have uploaded the 13 files at all.
The best result I've obtained so far, was manual uploading in batches.
I got all my music playlists uploaded that way, all my movies, the record of at least 4 pod-casts, but it crashed on the last but last but one episode of Mr Piety.
And I figured I could live with that.

Apple have already released an update to iTunes 10, which supposedly addresses some 'unexpected quitting' problems. Might do the trick for you.

Another trick is to connect the iPod and then launch Disk Utility and verify the iPod file structure and repair if necessary. Works for me on a really old, white click wheel iPod which has been dropped and bashed more than a few times.

Clive the flying ostrich: Amateur Polymath | Chief Heretic. Posted Sep 26, 2010
Well I installed the update, so we'll give that a try.
And thanks for that advice Turvy.
When it was in it's mood, it wouldn't find the Ipod at all, it would only recognise it as an external drive, and launch the disk utility automatically, so if it happens again like that I'll use the verify/repair - see what happens.

It's supposed to be a quote from Blackadder except I bungled the entry and omitted the "c" from "once", the sentiment however survives intact.
I've not done anything to te ipod since it is predictably function just fine with it's "corrupted" hard-drive.
We'll probably see fireworks the next time I connect it to the Imac.
