quicktime update and panther

Hi people

Just wondered if anyone else has had problems with the recent updates of quicktime and itunes? I dowloaded them through software update, installed and rebooted and found that keychain was asking if it was ok to change all to allow my airport connection to come through (I left it on when I rebooted, bit stupid really). I've since turned it off and changed the passwords manually, but just wondered if that was normal behaviour after quicktime updates and itunes. I've never encountered it before. The only logical explanation I could think of was that itunes uses my iairport connection for the itunes store. Would I be on the right track with that?

Well!! I take it all back. I just updates Safari through Software Update and on restart Airport says that none of my preferred networks are available. I had no problems reconnecting though.

Humph!

That's what I had and then keychains came up and asked me if it was ok to "change all" and I thought it was a bit odd so I didn't do anything. Maybe I should just let it sort it out after all.
I'm using an ibook g4 on 10.3.9

that's interesting to know turvy. Basically what happened was this:

I did a software update and got itunes 7.6.2 and quicktime 7.4.5
I left airport on and rebooted. When I logged back in again I got a message that said airport needs access to your keychain but there is an existing version.. Do you want to change all?

I said no, cause this seemed a bit odd. Then it asked if it was ok to access the keychain for my airport password. so I said "allow once" to shut it up. I still don't know if this is normal or if something iffy is trying to get access to my passwords. Anyone else had these messages after the update?
I admit when I set up the airport network a while back I did have to adjust the keychain, but I've had no problems up to this point. The help section says it is sometimes normal after software updates to need to change the keychain but I'm not sure about this one. But I think it's unlikely I've got a virus on this thing. I access my email from the website rather than through Mail and never download anything that's not from a source I trust. My firewalls on and I do have antivirus software but the subscription ran out and I haven't updated it cos I had some issues with it.
is there any way I can check keychain is running properly? I now get the error message every time I try to turn airport on and it's bugging me.
Sorry to ask dumb questions again and I apologise for my paranoidness!
cheers

If you know that airport needs your password (and it sounds like it), you can safely click "update all". If you're not sure or are being deliberately paranoid, you can click the "details" link to see the name of the software that is asking for the password (keep in mind it might be name of the "daemon" process that runs in the background, and so unfamiliar to you but perfectly legitimate).

Are you sure you didn't also install a security update at about the same time that you installed quicktime and itunes? That would definitely trigger the security alert, and there were a couple of security updates recently (at least for Leopard and Tiger). It's just a warning that the software has changed a little, so that you know that something isn't *exactly* the same before you allow it to use your password. And it's conceivable that the quicktime update could have changed the "modified" date of the folder that the airport software is in, that could potentially be enough of a change to trigger the alert.

Anyway, since you already allowed it once, there's no benefit in not allowing it all the time. If you really did have some horrid virus that was cleverly posing as your airport software without affecting its functionality, just in order to steal a network password that can be used for nothing except connecting to the network that the "infected" computer is *currently* on, well you've given it away already.

Thanks for explaining all that d'E. Like I say, I guess I just get worried sometimes because I'm still getting used to how the filesystems and things work with mac so if stuff changes I get nervous and am probably asking unnecessary questions. I didn't install any security updates with it but maybe there's something in the quicktime update that might've caused the alert, after all I suppose it would make sense because quicktime runs internet video content and I guess some file somewhere in Itunes would need access to airport for connection to the net for the store.
Thanks very much for being patient and explaining things in a way I can understand.
it's an apple80.... type file that needs access I think. the extension has changed. I think that's why.
Cheers
