hi guys.

got to sort out printer drivers for an ex pc printer. looking at the downloads off gutenprint and gimp print site it seems fairly straightforward. Only thing that bothers me is stuff like bugs etc as the site seems to be redeveloping the software all the time. Anyone got any advice they can give me? It's only that the site I looked up seems quite basic and I was wondering if the drivers there are third hand links off a more "official" site. Where's the best place to go for these and how are the new gimp drivers for Leopard systems?

What is the printer? Does the printer work if you connect it? Most do.

Is the printer on this list?

yes, it's an epson stylus DX3850. It's unsupported by epson in terms of mac drivers- I only have the windows ones.

The site that turvy linked to is the the official site. It's "basic" because it's all done by volunteers. But this stuff is generally good enough for Apple to include it in Mac OS X (10.4 and 10.5 have it preinstalled, I can't remember if 10.3 does). So go ahead and use it - the worst that can happen is that it doesn't print things as well as you want.

oh, I see! I thought it might be one of those development type sites but I wanted to make sure it was the right one.

Well, the printer works! Yay! I downloaded vuescan for scanning stuff off apple's web site as well. It's a free trial/plugin (which is fair enough) but it seems to be a US product- it keeps badgering me to register it and buy a copy but how does this work if you're not in the US? Anyone know of any other scanning software I could buy in the UK that's mac friendly?

I don't mean to complain either, but the colour quality's not great on vuescan, but maybe I'm being picky, I dunno.
