blocking ads in safari

kea ~ Far out in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the western spiral arm of the Galaxy lies a small, unregarded but very well read blue and white website

Just got that terrific addon in Firefox that eliminates animated/moving adverts. Is there anything similar for Safari? I found some freeware - Safariblock, but it looks like you have to block each ad individually smiley - erm

I haven't tried the adblocking feature, but Saft does that among other things.

There's also the trick of replacing your "hosts" file, it's used by Windows users a lot but should work on Mac OS X too, given it's unix underpinnings. I don't know if this will be in the right format for a Mac though

and moreover, it affects the entire system not just Safari, so is much more dangerous to muck about with. Better to use something like Saft, imo.

It's a combination of "Adblock Plus", "Adblock Filterset 'G' updater" and "Flashblock". smiley - geeksmiley - cool

It's not free ($10 US) but I've been very happy with PithHelmet.

dammit its a US product can you get it in UK?
I set up safari to block ads anyway but it's handy to know how to get rid of the others.

I just came on to have a rant about myspace, Dunno if anyone else's had problems but the place seems to be riddled with ads, and probably spyware too. smiley - grr I sometimes have to use the music pages as part of voluntary work I do relating to live gigs. This morning safari froze while on a page (thank god for force quit!) and the computer sounded like it was gonna restart (like when the HD goes to sleep) and I'm thinking what the hell's going on! so I restart anyway, rip the ethernet cord out, just to be sure, reset safari, run disk utility, check the firewall log and sure enough it had to block something or other. Now running in stealth for the peace of mind of added security. Not that I'm paranoid or anything smiley - biggrin (HD needed a tidyup anyway.)

Sooner or later I swear there's going to be a huge backlash against these people that run ( and host popups. They know we hate them so why can't they just take the hint and get rid of the flippin things??

It's downloadable so I don't imagine it's a problem. I downloaded it to Canada and there was no indication that it was restricted to NA. I've been very happy with it, along with Onyx as well which is a great little cleaner upperer. smiley - smiley

Sadly, it's because they cost next to nothing to deliver and a very tiny percentage of people are stupid enough to follow the link/buy the product. So they make money both from commission on the product and from any malware they succeed in installing in the process. No sane legitimate company would commission pop-up ads these days, so you're quite safe completely ignoring them.
