I cannot log into ichat via Jabber using my details* - which are to my knowledge all correct.

I have followed the advice in this FAQ to the letter

http://www.google.com/support/talk/bin/answer.py?answer=24076&query=jabber&topic=&type=

and it doesn't make the slightest bit of difference.

Setting the server to talk.gmail.com as recommend prompts an immediate message "cannot connect to host talk.gmail.com"

If I delete "talk" and just having server as gmail.com which is the default option that automatically gets inserted when i enter my google talk login details, it just sits there for a further 5 minutes before issuing the same rejection notice.

Impenetrable problems like these where the hallmarks of my old wretched PC and I really, *really* don't want to start down the path in my mind of associating 'Things Not Working' with my lovely new shiny imac, lest i get all pathological about it.

Someone please help me to fix this. smiley - headhurts because nothing appears to work!

Clive, I can't be certain, but it sounds like you might have a "stale" DNS entry and need to clear your DNS cache. (The server has moved to a different IP address but your machine still remembers the old IP address...)

If you're using a Router to connect to the web you'll often find that it also caches your DNS entries... Try just restarting your router before you try anything else. smiley - geek

Hmmm. Interesting. I'll give it a try. Cheers Peet.
