USB 2.0/1.1 and Graphics Cards

I don't know if I am actually listed as a group member, but I would like to be. My number is 2233680. I have an old Bondi Blue Imac from about 1998 that still ticks along. I run OS 8.5 on it. Mostly it's just for backup, and right now I'm trying to set it up to network with my other Mac, but having some difficulty. Mostly I use my Quicksilver 2002 G4 dual HD. I have 2 Hard Drives on it, both 80Gig, and am just about out of space. I have Panther loaded on both of the Hard Drives, and the versions are OS 10.3.9 on both.
I am looking for an external drive that has 200 Gig or more, both FireWire (400) and USB 2.0/1.1 compatable. I am hoping there are some good bargains during the holiday weekend we have here in the US...4th of July (Independence Day). Does anyone know if I can upgrad the USB capabilities to 2.0? I had heard that it was not possible,
see http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58428 but then one guy said:
"That means that you cannot add video memory to your current graphics card. You can replace your card with a more powerful one."
Does this have anything to do with USB 2.0? I'm a newbee. If anyone can clarify this, please do.
Thank you,
lalalalalola

There's no connection between the USB and the video card. However, if the machine has PCI slots (strongly implied by the suggestion that you can upgrade the video card!) then you could buy a Belkin USB2.0 card and fit it into a free slot. This wouldn't be "upgrading" your USB, but rather adding a separate USB2.0 capability...

Hope that helps; I'll add you to the roster... smiley - smileysmiley - run

Thank you Peet. I'll look into the Belkin Card and see if it will work. When talking to the Apple Store (online)and the techs at the Mac Store, they have no first hand information about this stuff, and don't want to talk to anyone for more than 5 minutes. I don't blame them really, but it is frustrating to search for answers and never find them (like in the tech documents on the main Apple Web Site). The only suggestion I got was "You should upgrade your whole system." Thanks, but no thanks.
I appreciate your quick response!

It makes sense that Apple would want to sell new Apple computers. You'll get better advice about upgrading older systems from other places, like http://www.macfixit.com or http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/systems.html
