New Seriosu thread for Mac Problems
Rod Hagen Started conversation Aug 1, 2002
Somehow the earlier 'serious thread" for Mac problems got overtaken by a discussion of clean and dirty rodents. I have a feeling I might be partly to blame. Well, in fact I KNOW is was largely to blame.
Accordingly , I offer this thread to MacGee and others , in full replacement of the earlier, no longer serious, thread and am currently grovelling in an appropriately obsequious fashion..
Anyone with any Mac problems out there?
Cheers
Rod

When starting new threads, have a heart for those of us who are subscribed to "the Orchard" - *every* thread here turns up on our pages by default, every time someone posts to it. Topic drift on an active thread keeps that one thread at the top of the list, but deliberately setting up multiple active threads for the same purpose swamps the rest of the site's activity... Eventually, the less patient amongst us will just Unsubscribe, and only the folk chatting will ever see the questions being posted.
Something you might not have noticed yet is that, unlike the Apple boards, these threads are permanent - there's nobody sweeping up dead threads! The more threads you start, the worse the signal-to-noise ratio...

Oh, and putting "New" in the title is a bit meaningless after the fourth or fifth "new" thread... Try putting the date in, if you must differentiate between versions of the same topic.

Have some everyone. Peet seems to be turning into a bit of a vogon when he's really just a big softy .
But if you're going to start a new thread everytime an old one degenerates... and given the track record of the apple refugees... oh dear, Peet could be right.
By the way. What's an error 110? I know there's a page describing the errors but I can't be bothered to go there. It's a file handling error of some kind because it happens when I'm saving a file. The error message is a classic "An error -110 occurred because an error occurred." I get it in Painter and in GraphicConverter of all things .

It's "-110 memAdrErr Address was odd, or out of range ", which isn't really a lot of help... Until somebody suggests something a bit more authoratative, have a play with the memory allocations for Painter and GraphicConverter - allocate 10% to 20% more memory and see if the message goes away...? It can't do much harm, and it might help a little. Are you working on particularly large images at the moment?

Hmmm. When I was last doing graphics in anger on a Mac (in college, two years ago) I found that one way to crash the graphics packages was to load a compressed file, such as a JPEG or GIF, which was just a little smaller than the application's current memory allocation. It would load, then exceed the memory allocation as it unpacked causing the application to bomb out. Clutching at straws here, but do you happen to have a huge number of ... open at the moment?

You mean like twenty thousand of the little blighters? No. It's only happening from time to time. I'll increase the memory allocation as you suggest.
