iMac modem problems

Ah, very good. Thanks for the link. It sounds very much as if the modem is broken, because everything else has been checked. Dang it... I think the modem's the standard internal iMac v.90, but I'm not at home right now, so I can't check it. (shhh... goofing off at work!)
Right now I'm using 8.6, and when I can back up the hard drive, I'll update it to 9 - I understand that System 9 will fix a problem with the modem squealing?
