When I welcome new researchers to the site, I generally give them a few of the basic ways to find their way around, which would include clicking the "Reply" button. I don't know if that information was included in your welcome message from Batty or not - I must admit I didn't read it as it looked a bit overwhelming, did you find it was "Too Much"
Getting a greeting right is quite a tricky thing, we all learn with experience.
So how are you getting along with the site afetr your first few weeks?

There's a meet up in London in January which will be good, maybe you could get someone to bring you over for that....
