I like Woodface too. Can't say I'm a great fan of Paul Hesters songs though (Italian Plastic on Woodface and Skin Feeling on the Together Alone Album).

Yeah, My Telly's gone Bung is good for a giggle smiley - silly. The scary thing is that on its own we'd probably all be saying how good it is, but when you compare it to Neil's writing, well....BTW, can I suggest anyone who hasn't already been, go & have a look at Neil's website www.nilfun.com. You'll probably need a fast connection to get the best out of it though. It's a bit weird to navigate, but perservere cos there's some great video on there.

Hi! Could you explain the lyrics of the song"Don't dream it's over" to me? My english level is not enough to make me understand this song.
I would like to know what Neil Finn means in this song or what he wanted to say. Thanks!
Stephen

Hi Stephen,

It's hard to explain a Neil Finn song, even for those of us who speak English as our first language. His songs usually mean different things to different people.

I always thought of "Don't dream it's over" as being about the end of a relationship. I'm not sure exactly what Neil was trying to say about it. Whenever I've heard him asked about his songs, he's usually pretty evasive.

I find his songs full of imagery, and I enjoy that. In the beginning of "Don't dream it's over" I picture a dark stormy day, with a forlorn looking figure standing out in the rain, trying to catch some in a paper cup.

My explanation probably doesn't help you. If I've used any words here you don't understand, just let me know, and I'll try to explain. Or perhaps there are some words in the song that you don't know the meaning of?

By the way, which country are you from? I had a look at your personal space, but it looks like you haven't had time to write anything yet. You need to write something there otherwise people can't leave you a message on your space. It doesn't have to be much. One or two sentances will do for a start.

It would be interesting to hear what other researchers think the song is about.

I agree with you on the explantion, though to me the thing about paper cups has always made me think that you can have freedom with or without clinging onto memories of the past (that are in the cup, possibly).

God, that was a bit deep wasn't it?

Dunno about the verse with the car. that's a difficult one.

Also, another good link that might help with explanations of the songs:
Search for Crowded House on Google and go to what's called the Tongue in the Mail homepage, there's a discography section and lyrics and on each lyrics sheet there's often a little note about what the song was about.

Hope that helps.

Steve, (its just a horse!)

As a big fan i have to say that I was quite disappointed with One Nil! For me, other than a couple of tracks, it came nowhere near the level of Try Whisting This. Saying that I saw him at Nottingham on the One Nil tour and he was superb, and im looking forward to the new brothers album, due out this year. First one had two of his best, in "Taking Sense" and "Angels Heap".

Agreed. I hate to say it, but all his songs are starting to sound the same.

Yeah, it was said that this was him finding his feet as a solo artist, but although i do like it, I agree there is sameness, or even blandness about it. Saying that having seen "Anytime" performed live and stripped down, it is a great song. It just doesn't come across on the Album.

True they are all good songs. Just too much sameness. He is great live, isn't he!
All the old songs take on a new lustre.

Lustre, great term! Never performs a song in the same way. Changes the lyrics seemingly on the spot and it always sounds right. Got to go, speak to you soon!
