Actually, speaking in a strict physics sense, it's not work, because everything that's lifted comes back down still weighing the same (unless you sweat extremely on every lift) - so in the complete cycle, the mass is back at the energy level at which it started, and no actual "work" has been done

Step aerobics students have no practical way to harness the periodic gravitational energy they gain during a workout. Science *could* give them springboots or something, to let them keep this energy... but then it wouldn't be so much of a workout, would it.
