h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

Two nights ago, I found myself wondering if I was some kind of masochist.

I was tired. It was 12:30 in the night. It was raining. I had walked a mile already and had another one and a half to go. I was poorly dressed. I was carrying six bags, containing such weighty miscellania as a six pint carton of milk and my laundry. And that's not counting my overstuffed backpack.

I'd had a sore back /before/ I even left.

Why?

I was making a one-man protest against the buses.

The day before I was the last one to get on a bus. In the space of an hour, there were meant to be five buses. There were none. Not a one. And I was the last person to get on - the bus drove right past stops crammed full of waiting students, freezing and soaked by the rain.

That day, the bus had repeated its antics, something about which I was not best pleased. I got off, did my stuff and eventually it was time to go home. And guess what? I arrived at the bus station, just in time...

And the bus had left early.

Now, don't get me wrong. I understand they can't work miracles. But missing /five buses/? Making people wait for an /hour/ for a bus that was meant to come after five minutes? And actually having the audacity to leave the stop early when there were no more buses for an hour? That's pushing it.

So I did what any decent person would do, and refused to give them my custom. I would make my own way home!

And so it was that I found myself in such agony. And the weird thing is, I enjoyed every minute of it.
