This is a pretty good description of Maidenhead, a bland but largely inoffensive town mid way between Reading and Slough. I'm off there now, incidentally, to visit a friend in Cookham. Will be on Bad Godesburg Way in about half an hour!
The name 'Maidenhead' commemorates the killing of the inhabitants of a convent (if I remember rightly) many many centuries ago.

The name 'Maidenhead' refers to a quay that was built at the Thames just outside the town several hundred years ago. Maiden meaning new, Head meaning the quay.
It's got nothing to do with dead nuns, romantic as that may be!
