A654211 The history of optics
Dr Hell Posted Nov 14, 2001
Xy: Great title... I'll use it, since I like it and it has been suggested twice. Thanks a lot.
About the Thomsons: It's indeed an interesting story. BUT: The Thomsons worked on electrons and not on light, so for that reason I think they'd be better mentioned in the 'history of the atom model' or in 'the wave/particle dualism' entry. JJ 'discovered' the electron and GP proved it shows wave-behaviour.
Then again if you and some other researchers insist, I can easily add them to the entry...

Hi HELL,
3) - Sorry, sense of humour failure on my part there! I might use "typically", rather than "consiquently" but only if you like.

PS (oops, missed your last post) - Clearly photon/electron behaviour are both related to wave/particle duality but I think it will only confuse things to introduce electrons into the discussion. I would agree - best left for another entry.

I have replaced 'consequently' by 'ironically' - that should make it clear.
Thanks Ugi.

Optics?... Oooptics... Psst... Optics?
Hey you? Interested in the history of optics?
Anyone?
(For those who will not read the first part of the thread: This entry is on the history of optical science. Not the booze-dosers with the same name.)

Your right Hell, its very good
Maybe the writing of the history of bar optics as spirit measuring devices in pubs entry could keep you occupied whilst you wait for this version to get picked ;-D.
we need more combinational smileys darnit...

I have a stupid question. Does light accelerate? I mean, when I turn on the light switch, light travels to me at 300,000 m/s. But what's its zero to C time?

hmmm, considering that light has momentum there should be some figure for acceleration. But then, photons may choose to be waves at this precise moment, with an acceleration of m/s2.
I'm not sure whether J.W.v.Goethe's (yes, that's *him*) theory of colours is worth mentioning here. It was wrong anyway
A biiiiig thumbs up from me!
