Didn't want to post on the Leisure District thread...think it was beginning to get a bit pointless now

Hope this helps with anything you wanted to know:

Leisure District (LD) was an internet site accessible by Telewest users via the digi boxes. It was a community site that offered chat, games, virtual pets, a kids zone and a library where you could go and express opinions and debate on a huge variety of subjects.

This site was closed at the beginning of this year and replaced with another site Yoome2 available only to Telewest users.

I'm not entirely sure who/how the link to h2g2 was started for digibox users but it was circulated on a "magic email", which basically meant that people could access this site who don't have a pc.

I can't speak for every Ex LDer but personally I never considered h2g2 as a "replacement" for LD, indeed I had the email nearly 2yrs ago and came on here as well as LD and should LD return, will continue to do so.

As regards the other thread, I saw what you posted as, you say, and saw the humorous side of it

The problem really is that some people have a negative view of Ex LDers and feel that they have nothing to offer and are, for want of a better expression, "invading" this site. This unfortunately leads to some heated discussions....I would generally recommended the wearing of flak jackets and helmets....

LD was also available with other cable service providers.

There was also a WebTV and the internet verson. The Telewest STB 'digibox' was capable of providing most parts of them both in addition to the version availabe through 'interactive services'. This was dependant on the firewall being down.

It allowed for people from all over to interact live. Since it was part of the package deal, it was in effect a cheap way to chat with people in say America.

There was real disscussion from time to time, But a lot of the usual chat site anticts too.

BuTTonS and I both taled to the same people, yet AFAK never talked to each other, until we bumped into each other in a h2g2 thread.

The FoLDers Arms, a pub-like area created for former LDers vith no restrictions on who can join in from any other part of h2g2.

But be prepared for some daft in fun stuff. It is what you make of it.

So by providing something, anything with common ground, two people can find a basis to communicate. As with you asking a question and people trying to share information with you.

Users of LD also could band together like h2g2 has clubs and societes.

They did it by names that are similar, in appearence. ie. The WaCkY cAsE tHiNg ThAt CaN dRiVe YoUr EyeS mAd or adding "thedistrict_" nurse/brat/goodguy etc. A character id $user$ or ^_user_^ all sorts of grouping.
Some did it as attempts at indivuality: ^_~nobody_copy_this~_^ etc.

Glad not everyone misconstrued me I've rarely been on the end of a flame on this site, only once or twice. I can hold my own having been used to usenet for a few years, but i don't find it particularly constructive here and have made more than a few friends by post enquiring appologies, i usually find these things are nothing and you can go on to have interesting convos!

i think it is great to have people from any walk on board, and the use of CAPS and txt etc is by no means exclusive to ex LDers, as can be shown most summers when the schools kick out and there is a surge of teens on the site using just such methods. Won;t stop me taking the p*ss out of it though, I'm just surprised no-one has done the reverse and taken the p out of the sometimes over pompous jargonised language used by some other groups on here!
