New Star Trek Rocks!

The new Star Trek rocks! It's fun, I really enjoyed it. Young cast is excellent, especially Kirk, Spock, and Uhura. Got a good laugh at the way Dr. McCoy, and later Scotty, were introduced to the film. Cameo by the older Spock should keep Trekkies happy. Good effects and action, but the real magic is the chemistry among the characters, which amazingly still works. As I fan of both Star Wars and Star Trek, I would say that the new Trek film is a notch below Empire Strikes Back, but light years ahead of the Star Wars prequels. And simply fun in its own right, all comparisons aside.

I'm a bit leery of Simon Pegg as Scotty- he tends to ham it up a bit more than suits my tastes. But I've been giving some thought to seeing it. Maybe K and I should (finally) use my AMC Cineplex gift card and see that. Hope more people review it.

I've just come back from watching it with Gruesome #1 who has turned out to be a girl after my own heart (as regards sci-fi and fantasy )
We were the only "girls" in the cinema (which is tiny and only half full) but we both thought it was totally fantastic.
Unfortunately I had to see it in German - so missed out on the accents and some of the nuances (since I've never seen TOS in German) but oh my!
Can't wait to see it again.

I heard (On Simon Mayo's programme on Five Live - thanks to the new podcast directory!) that Simon Pegg's accent is absolutely awful, but that the Star Trek film, despite that, is a Must See. It is probably on in the original English at my son's local cinema - I might go and see it with him..... yes, I've just looked. It's on at 9 pm every night this week....

Simon Pegg does a great job and, dare I say it, his accent is actually better than James Doohan's. Don't get me wrong, I loved James Doohan as Scotty, but his Scottish accent wasn't all that great. In my mind I chalked it up to Scotty being in Starfleet so long.
The whole cast did a great job. None of them looked like they were doing imitations, they all made the characters look natural. The doctor was my favourite. He managed all the old Bones lines without making them sound like a parody. "Damn it Jim, I'm a doctor not a physicist!"
I loved how they used the original music!!!

I went to see it on Thursday night. Loved it. It really was great fun and, although I'm not a genuine Trekkie, found it fits into the whole Star Trek thing really well - without spoiling any of the illusions about the characters, the ships, the history of the whole Federation etc etc. A nice touch was that it told you how Christopher Pike got to be in a wheelchair (my son tells me that he appears in one ST episode in a wheelchair)
Just imagine - according to imdb, Russell Crowe was in the running for Nero! No way! Eric Bana pulled it off so perfectly. And put so much erotic into the part. I always think of the Romulans as fairly erotic anyway, but then, who am I to say?

you knew I'd chime in... Eric Bana is just a coiled spring of sexiness. He just can't help it.
But the thing that surprised me, coming out of the film, was how totally sexy Spock (younger) turned out to be.

Agreed on the attractive (surprise!) young Spock. But I liked the young Kirk too.
I saw the movie again today! So much fun!

As an Aussie, I'm familiar with Eric Bana's earlier work, and I find it very hard to see him as sexy. In fact I still find it hard taking him seriously as an actor. Having said that, I do think he did a brillian job in Star Trek.
Have a look at this though, and you'll see what I mean. Poida (Peter, for those of you who don't speak Bogan) is one of his more famous characters.

Trillian's Child, you sound pretty much like a real Trekkie to me. Oh, right your son told you about Captain Pike. I should've read on

Hmmm, Sho, that's interesting. I tend to find guys sexy who are attractive, even beautiful. I may start a new thread on the subject in Ask. Does sexy equal attractive, does attractive equal sexy?

I'm pretty much a Trekkie. The original series and the new movie don't quite mesh on Christopher Pike. In "The Menagerie" Pike is not just in a wheelchair, but a complete rolling life support system, and he can't talk except through blinking lights. The new movie carefully skirts the discrepancies by setting everything in an alternate time line.

I love to watch Trek, except for Enterprise, but I'm not really a Trekkie. Probably to the everlasting relief of

Just saw it with some friends, one of which had seen it twice already. I thought it was pretty good, and I really liked the way it was shot.
