Devil in the White City

Post 1

Ellen

I just finished reading most of Devil in the White City. It is a very good book about two men, the architect of the 1893 Chicago Worlds Fair, and the serial killer who preyed on women who came to Chicago for the fair. It is a true story, history not fiction, yet it reads like a novel. Very scary stuff - I found myself skipping most of the architecture bits and getting sucked into the story of the killer. *SPOILER* He built a hotel with all sorts of secret airtight, soundproof chambers and a basement of horrors, with a kiln to dispose of bodies. Brrr. I should go back and read the architecture stuff about the fair now, because that was actually pretty interesting too.

I've been reading lots of Kathy(?) Reichs books lately, very gory! Fiction, but based on fact 'cos the author is a pathologist, so you get loads of grisly descriptions of autopsies & stuff; the plots are very well thought out though, so it keeps you hooked until the end!

Hi JEllen
I meant to reply to this weeks ago, still here now.

So the book sounded interesting, I wondered whether you were glad you had read it or whether you regretted it? Also, do books or films tend to spook or get to you more? I find films do, just because once I have seen it, it is like I have seen it for real. Whereas imagination inspired by books is never as visual for me.

HI Kaz, I'm not sorry I read it - it was a very good book even if it did scare me pretty badly. Yes, I would say films can definitely be creepier than books, more visceral, which is why I avoid horror movies.
