I was asked to Peer Review an article for a proper scientific journal.
Fortunately the editor thought my comments were spot on and she agreed with me.

Wooo! Congratulations! Now you can point at this and say that all the time you've spent on h2g2 was worthwhile...

Oh no! You misunderstand science. No one gets paid for the contribution. The authors of the papers don't get paid, at least not by the journal, the reviewers don't get paid. Yet the Journals will still charge you to buy them.
One does it for the Advancement of Science!

Or to download articles online. And bloody expensive it is, too.

Oh, I guessed as much Do they ever ask for proof readers?
I should think it will stand you in good stead if they were that pleased with you.

The editor's actually my boss, so I hope that it will stand me in good stead with her. I don't know if they have proof readers as well, but reviewing articles does make it easier to write them.

Just got back the author's comments on the review I did - they've taken my points on board and amended the manuscript! They are actually really eminent scientists. Still now the paper is better written..

Well I'm not entirely sure if they were pleased, as their paper is less impressive now, but it does at least mean that the conculsions represent the data.
It's reassured me that yes I can do this, and yes I do know a fair bit about science.
