That's so true - and there must be areas where a nice Penguin Classics translation of the primary source simply isn't available.

I am never going to be a researcher of history - but I am a consumer and an engergetic one.

Edward - how cool is that - I don't know of any free hosting sites.

No clue how cool it is, since I've no idea who Pankhurst is!

That said, I don't know know of any sites, either, except perhaps blogspot or wordpress or similar?

Actually, Z, there are some cool primary sources on the web, depending on what languages you read. There's one, however, that has been translated. Here's one I use fairly frequently when teaching medieval history: http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/sbook2.html

And it has some lovely crusades stuff on it, as well!

Ah. I knew the name was familiar, but couldn't for the life of me place it! Thanks!

Sorry...but that's a totally shite Guide Entry. Emmeline was the smiley - cool Pankhurst. The Radical one. Sylvia and Cristabel made a deal with Lloyd-George: help us out in WWI and we'll give you the vote afterwards. Emmeline fell out with her bourgeoise sister and mum over it. With her it was AttackAttackAttack! She was a militant Left Anarchist who'd have nothing to do with the war.

The report I'm after is of an incident during which Emmeline was speaking at a hall opposite the old district court (where my wife worked, and where the Police Museum used to be - which is how I got to hear about it). She and her associates (members of the ILP, CP, etc etc) surrounded the stage with barbed wire and kept the massed police at with clubs, thrown chairs, bricks, etc. For four hours. These were not polite, middle class women with placards. These were feisty bitches!

Later in life she lived openly and in an open relationship. She was also a major supporter of Emperor Haile Selassie during his exile in Britain.

Damn! I've caught myself talking shite. It was Emmeline who was tyhe mother, Sylvia the radical daughter, communist and honorary citizen of Ethiopia.

Which means that the Guide Entry was OK and I'm an eejit.

smiley - erm And now I'm confused about whose police report I'm going to see.
