I've read a couple of Heinlin books, tho I can't remember off hand which they were. But they were good. (I think one was called Job or something? maybe?)He has a good feel for what makes an interesting and good scifi book.
Another good series is Foundation by Issac Asimov. yup. It is simular to Dune (by herbert) in that it is tough to get through the whole series and still keep track of the storyline. But worth it.
peace.

Ex Libris Draconium [Taking a vacation from h2g2] Posted Nov 8, 2001
Whenever I try to read the Dune series, I get stuck on the second book. I've read Dune three times, the most recent being about a month or two ago, and the earliest was in fifth grade. The fifth grade reading was done mostly to impress my teacher, Terry, who thought it was great I was reading such advanced books. Since then I've tried to read the books, but about halfway through Dune Messiah I just lose interest. I haven't tried that new trilogy yet.

It was like that with me too with Dune. Unfortunately, it doesn't really get any better, I don't think. I don't really remember what the other books were about. I just know I read them I was rather impressed with myself for struggling through them. I'm not really quite sure why they are tough to read, but BOY I felt proud of myself for finishing the series. It is odd, because his other books aren't quite as complex (that I've read).
peace.

Amy, I'm reading the version of Poddy with three endings. I'm almost done with the main part of the story, and then I get to read the essays and all the endings.
Theory, my parents are bugging me to read Foundation. It's somewhere on my reading list. (Which I really don't keep track of. I just grab something off the shelf that I haven't read yet) I'll get to them someday...

The Foundation series is OK, but I've never been able to get myself interested enough in Dune to pull it off the library shelf... Of course, if I could find a library that had the whole series, instead of missing #1 or 2, I'd likely be more interested...

That would be good. Reading part of a series is bad. Of course, the first book stands alone just fine. I would strongly recommend it.
Another great series to read is Fred Saberhagen's Book of Swords. Very cool fantasy, about twelve swords of extreme power that were forged by the God Vulcan. If the library doesn't have it, you could probably pick up a copy at a used book store.

May have to check it out...
have you read anything by Raymond E. Feist? He is one of my fav. fantasy authors (I can't believe I forgot about him when I compiled my list). He has a big long series out. The books are normal sized, but there is, like, at least 10 books in the series. They have cool characters involved in good fantasy situations. Very nice. yup.

I've heard of Feist. One of my friends was reading him about three years ago. I've been meaning to get around to him, but I haven't...like with so many other things...
I just finished Podkayne of Mars. I'm curious, Amy. Which ending did you like best? Were you with the Poddy killers, or did you think she should stay alive?

I've put up a more comfortable place for discussion: The Spire Library. It's not done yet, but it should be by Sodit (Monday for all you non-thingites).
It's at http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/A656291

I couldn't decide... I liked Poddy, but I have to agree that the originally published ending feels tacked on... Heck, I even like the compromise!
