A629246 - The Corporation of London
Kit - pondering the shape of the world ... still round but with some bumps. Posted Sep 27, 2001
I don't know exactly how their income split goes. But I do know that it looks nothing like most councils in the UK. (Thier's is about 1/3 business rates, 1/3 Council Tax and 1/3 Revenue support grant (from centeral government).
The Corporation of London is a fairly hefty benefactor to many other areas controlled by the GLA. Becasuse the City is frankly SO loaded and almost nobody lives in the square mile they find it hard to spend all of their earnings on normal council services like education. Therefore they support some of the rest of London with contributions... only reasonable realy!
Also, don't know if you want to put a link it to [url removed by moderator]
Cheers

I like the entry, but when I finished reading it, I wanted more! I'm especially interested in the pre-history and early history of the Corporation of London. How and why did it come to be founded? How and why did early trade unions get the power to decide who votes in the elections?
While I think that the inclusion of that information (if available) would make for a really interesting read, that could just be my personal bias. The article is interesting and informative already. I could just be greedy.

I think of the early trade guilds (Livery Companies) more as business cartels, & as how tey got the power .... well they had t money. Your not being greedy (I said something similar myself over at http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/F57152?thread=140504) but I just havent got the time to do the research but if some one else dose then post here & I'll give you full credit.
