Jodan,
I had the mandatory two h2g2 links plus about four others and a neat footnote explaining the origins of some of the Saxon English! I'm sure you did a good job too. I failed to spot a couple of double inverted commas.
Thanks, Kat and Jick!
TC! Great hints and tips! I didn't realise that a Sub could add in contributors? The point about non-native English speakers (and Tit's point about some English speakers!) is well taken. I would always consult the author about amendments, particularly if something as important as a title change is afoot. As a writer, I like it when the Sub contacts me to keep me informed. Makes me feel valued.
Tit - thanks for your comments!

Hmm. More responsibility?
Hmm. And you asked for it?
Hmm. I hate responsibility.
Hmm. And you asked for it?
Hmm. Well, you got it!
Hmm. There's a test for subeditors?
Hmm. Wish there was a test for CAC...
Hmm. So that means there are people who wished to be subeditors who didn't get to be wandering around?
Hmm. More reasons to speak loudly and carry a large electric torch.
Hmm. The things you learn around here.

Yes, there was a test. It had lots of spelling and grammar errors. There were stylistic things to sort out and links to find. I was supposed to find two h2g2 links, but I could only find one decent one. The other was a bit of a stretch. It was quite fun as I did a bit of my own research for the external links and found out the meanings of a couple of words derived from the Saxon!

Well, 'Whit-nour-what-nour-gate' means 'neither one thing nor the other' and The name "Shambles" comes from the Saxon "Fleshammels", which means, "the street of the butchers". Not ultra-riveting stuff, I confess. Genuine research, though!

Crikey - I didn't have anything as hard as that. Would've been fun though!

Well, you now have experience that I haven't, TC! and yes, it was fun. I've done and submitted my first one, and I'm waiting to see if Gnomon approves of what I've done to his entry before submitting that.

"Fleshammels"
Hmm. There's a joke in there somewhere... let me get my cleaver!

Unexpectedly, I have a new entry in preparation. Must be the excitement of becoming a Sub that's proved a stimulus. Not finished yet. See that you think!

Good Girl!
This is a bit of history that I hadn't encountered.
Amazing how stupid some people can be.
Of course, that fact that most of the D-Day fellows sat on their hands for months waiting for the right weather, and when it came time to land, many ended up miles from their destination, and some of them didn't see any fighting at all until they hit the hedgerows, seems to have slipped from popular memory!
I won't even get into Operation Market Garden.

Thanks, tonsil.
It's an entry I've been thinking about for some time - I'm also going to do one about the Accrington Pals - where the government thought it would be good for morale if men from the same towns and villages fought together, with the result that whole communities of men were wiped out in the same battles.
Jick,
Thank you. I'm working on my first batch- half complete, half part worked on. I had Jagged Jack's entry A2163070 - and I found it diffucult, as I like headings and the structure of the entry made that it difficult to add any.
Just waiting for Gnomon's comments on his now.

When I thnk of the war in Italy I can't remember much except the films "The English Patient" and "Tea with Mussolini" - the latter being very memorable indeed and proving that the war was certainly very big in Italy. Dammit it had to be - it's right between Africa and Germany and was one of the leading Fascist countries.
Keep up the good work, ZSF! Editing Gnomon's entries is a pushover. You only have to read them through and tick them at the bottom.

Oh. I just glanced over it and I saw opportunities for headings, so many lost opportunities... It was just pregnant with probing subtitles, it was!
"that the war was certainly very big in Italy"
Ah.
No.
I will be neither sarcastic or superior in tone.
I just will not.
I will behave myself in the face of such a marvelous straight line.
I really will.
